The site for food lovers in The Hague and surroundings

Confrérie des amateurs du bon vin

Website: www.wijntje.nl

Inlichtingen: Jacques van Boxtel

This wineclub was established in Den Bosch in 1972;  it is a real club, you have to join to become a member.  Many of the wines are imported directly from the vineyard by the Confrérie. One of these producers is Mr. Thirion in St.-Hyppolyte from the Elzas. His wines have been imported by the Confrérie from the start.  Now they have some 80 wines which are regularly selected by a tasting panel.  The wines are selected on quality and price and the prices range from €5,- tot €35,-.

a summary by Jacques van Boxtel

Penin

Viognier

Mas Rous

The Confrérie organizes bi-annual tastings throughout the country and also in The Hague. They are good fun and you learn a lot from these wine tastings. We can recommend the Mas Rous from the Rousillion (€6,35); it is our house wine! For the white we switch more often from the Viognier from Astruc (€6,95) to the wines of Achille Thirion from the Elzas and for the rosé we are a fan of Penin (€7,70). We can also recommend the Prosecco Beato Bartolomeo from the Veneto for around €11,-.  In the Summer period we always have some Pinot Noir from Thirion in the fridge!  You can also ask for a small case of wines to taste their selection.

De Rotterdamse Wijnkoperij

Laan van Poot 348

2566 DE Den Haag

website :www.derotterdamsewijnkoperij.nl

Information: Dorine van der Hof- Fijn van Draat via the website

Dorine and Peter van der Hof have owned this company since 2006 which is located on the Laan van Poot, The Hague. They have a wine tasting twice a year.  At the last session in October we bought a wine from Cairanne and a Vacquéras which we can recommend.  Price and quality are very good!

In the Spring the emphasis is on tasting white wines and rosé and in the Autumn it is mainly red wines. They also have a good selection for Christmas and for gifts for business relations which are sold via the website. The prices are good and range between €3,- tot €20,-.

Marius jouw wijnvriend

Piet Heinstraat 93 / Van Hogendorpstraat 16C

2518 CD Den Haag / 2242 KZ Wassenaar

website: www.jouwwijnvriend.nl

opening hours: Tuesday – Friday from 10:00 tot 19:00, Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 hours

Marius van Vliet now has two nice shops: in the Piet Heinstraat (The Hague) and in the Van Hogendorpstraat (Wassenaar). The shops are very accessible and you are helped in a friendly manner and given good service.  We asked for Portugese wines on our visit and got a lot of information: we bought four different Portugese wines but there was a lot more to choose from.  Portugal is a wine producing country which is generating more interest lately; they have a wide range of good wines and many old and established wine estates.

The prices are quite reasonable.  Of course Marius also has wines from the rest of the world.

On the photograph you can see that each wine is accompanied by a sealed card with all the relevant information concerning, country, origin, grapes etc. Very informative.

Marius also organizes tastings on a regular basis. You can find more information on his website. Next time we will also be going!

'Wine shop of the year 2013'

Marius, together with nine other wine shops, has won the title of wine shop of the year.

The Gouden Ton is a well known address for good wines. We tasted the Chardonnay and the Crianza from Enate a famous wine estate at the foot of the Pyrenees. Their bottles are also adorned with labels painted by various artists. Ferran Adrià had the wines on his wine list. As far as price and quality is concerned they are fine. We would like to hear of your experiences with the Gouden Ton.
